Before collecting the sample, tests will be carried out to rule out not having infectious diseases, such as HIV and hepatitis, and to ensure that its storage is safe, avoiding cross-contamination.
The main motivation for preserving fertility in women is due to the fact that in western society there is a voluntary delay in motherhood, because a significant percentage of women put the procreation of a professional, economic or social status first. But due to the fact that from the biological point of view, at 35 years of age, the ovarian response begins to decrease, and that, from the age of 40, the possibilities of getting pregnant with one’s own oocytes do not exceed 20%, the appearance of this new technique is justified.
As for the number of ideal oocytes to vitrify, there is no exact number, but it will be determined by the age of the woman. It is estimated that women under 35 years of age with 10-15 oocytes would achieve success in achieving a pregnancy close to 85%. From the age of 36, it would be only 35% successful.
During the Process, analytical tests will be carried out to rule out infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. Subsequently, an ovarian stimulation will be carried out, supplying hormonal treatment with daily subcutaneous injections for about 10 or 12 days, such as that carried out in IVF. During this period of time, it will be necessary to perform ultrasound scans every two or three days, and assess the growth of the follicles, which are small cystic formations where the oocyte develops inside. Reaching these follicles the maturity when their diameter is between 17 and 20 mm, an injection is provided, making the following 36 hours the ideal time for puncture and extraction of follicular fluid, in which in the laboratory the mature oocytes are retrieved. This extraction lasts about 15 minutes and is done with sedation and on an outpatient basis.
The oocytes are vitrified and are kept in liquid nitrogen containers at -196 ºC, and can remain preserved for dozens of years. Naturally the time will depend on the age of the woman.
Usually, the age limit for fertilizing the oocytes, and subsequent embryo-transfer, is set in each clinic, at the Manzanera Gynecological Center it is possible until 56 years after a thorough health check-up on the woman.
CONCLUSIONS: Vitrification of oocytes is a possibility to consider, when for some family or social aspect it is so determined. The treatment lasts 12-14 days, the vitrified oocytes have no time limit. The age of use of these oocytes is set in our clinic up to 56 years old, provided that the health studies carried out allow it.
