The absence of spermatozoids in the ejaculate is denominated as azoospermia and it has several causes.
It can originate from an obstruction in testicular tubes which blocks the passage of spermatozoids into the ejaculate. In this case, we are speaking about obstructive azoospermia.
Azoospermia can also be the consequence of testicles not producing spermatozoids. This is called secretory azoospermia.
If you were diagnosed with azoospermia after a sperm test, the first step is to repeat the test after a few days to discard the possibility of a false result. If after a repeated test the azoospermia is confirmed, you should get the level of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) tested to distinguish whether it is secretory or obstructive azoospermia.
If you have obstructive azoospermia, a testicular biopsy can be performed to obtain the spermatozoids directly from the testicular tissue before undergoing an assisted reproduction treatment.
If you have secretory azoospermia, the testicular biopsy is unreasonable, and the only solution is to opt for a donor’s sperm in order to undergo an assisted reproduction treatment.
