Put simply, it refers to the natural decline in fertility that occurs over time. Traditionally, this is associated with women over the age of 35, when the quality and quantity of eggs decline significantly. However, nowadays, many women choose to postpone motherhood due to factors such as career development, financial stability or the search for a suitable partner. This raises the question: how should one approach motherhood at an advanced age?
The first challenge is declining fertility. As a woman gets older, her ovarian reserve decreases and the quality of her eggs declines, increasing the likelihood of pregnancy complications such as miscarriages or genetic defects. However, reproductive medicine has made enormous strides. Techniques such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and egg vitrification have opened up new opportunities for women who wish to wait until later in life to become mothers.
Secondly, maternal health becomes a crucial factor during the process. Women over the age of 35 face a higher risk of developing conditions such as high blood pressure or gestational diabetes. It is essential that they receive specialist medical care and make appropriate plans regarding their general health before conceiving.
In terms of the emotional experience, many women feel a deep sense of maturity and stability when they become mothers later in life. Whilst there may be physical challenges, many women at this stage feel more secure, which can contribute to a more thoughtful and balanced approach to parenting.
In conclusion, although the biological risks are greater, women can manage pregnancy later in life with the right tools and expert medical support. The key lies in being well-informed and making informed decisions about reproductive health.
María Pombar Gómez
Embryologist

IMAGE: ¿Por qué es cada vez más frecuente tener hijos a los 50 en vez de a los 40?
